A Veteran's Day

Without explanation I veered off the usual course we’d take into Springfield.
Julie then asked “Where are we going?” Oak Ridge Cemetery was my reply. Nothing more was needed to be said as she knew I what was up too.

President Lincoln and his entire family are buried here making it a point of destination for many. In fact except for Arlington National no other cemetery in the United States receives more visitors than Oak Ridge.

In addition there are memorials for the Korean War, World War II and Vietnam Veterans of Illinois.

It was at the Korean War memorial that we noticed a small number of folks cleaning up the area. We stopped by to chat with this fine bunch of Americans who had volunteered their day to labor on their hands and knees.

It’s a dedicated vigil of a few that maintains the respectful appearance of these two fine sculptures. Truly a humble and earnest testament…we were both moved and privileged
to be there at that moment.

To touch the bronze nose of Lincoln has always been the delight of many a school child and adult alike so we couldn’t forego this time
honored ritual.
There alone, sitting on a bench, was a very petite elderly woman. She smiles as we grasp this well polished proboscis hence fulfilling our ordination.

"Beautiful day isn’t it?" I ask.
“Why yes…we just came in from Montana and expected rain.”
Walking towards her an elderly gentleman makes his way up the path and waves to us. My curiosity takes over from there and an exchange of information pursues

Both were veterans of the Second World War and had met in South East Asia. They have been married a good number of years and are well into their eighties.
He had mentioned how they like to pay their respects at the monuments and reflect about that era as it was an part of their lives.

The woman stands and walks off looking for a water fountain leaving me to converse some more with her husband.

Lastly I asked him “What would be the greatest monument to a Veteran?”
“That’s easy!” he replies reaching out to shake my hand “Peace!”
I couldn’t agree with you more sir…I couldn't agree with you more.

On turning around I notice his wife reaching to touch Lincoln nose a good two feet short of her reach. “Darn! I can’t reach it” she says to us.
“Yes you can… it just takes team work.” is what I told her.
So with her right hand in mine I reached out and accomplished the task. With her bright blue eyes smiling back at me softly she says “Thank You”.
As my heart was lifted to an immeasurable height I couldn’t help but feel a kinship on this, her ordination.
