The witness in this case stated:
"I was driving home from
work on Route 51 south from Bloomington to Heyworth around 11:15pm. This is
about a ten mile drive. I was about half way home when I noticed three bright
lights, side by side, in the sky hovering around the Randolph Grain Elevator. I
estimate the object was about 500-1000 feet in the air.
"Curiosity got the best of
me, so I turned on Randolph road and proceeded east to check things out. As I
got closer, the object was still hovering and the lights were getting brighter.
I passed the grain elevator and the object still had not moved. I was getting
closer and my cell phone rang and no one was there. I looked later and no
incoming call registered in my log on the phone.
"I kept driving and then,
all of a sudden, the object darted northeast very quickly and was gone. I
checked the flight schedule at the Central Illinois Regional Airport and
nothing comes in from the south at the time. The Airport is about 10 miles from
the sighting. There is a plane that comes in from Chicago at 11:10. I could see
the landing lights as I was stopped on the road.
"I don't know what I saw,
as the object appeared to be an oval shape based on the layout of the lights.
The cell phone ringing and the way the object left the area is what has made me
think I saw something out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, I have no
pictures."
The MUFON Investigator stated
the following:
"I noted times, distances
on various roads, and his estimate of the position and size of the object.
Because two and a half months have elapsed since the sighting, the scenery is
different, and memories have faded, these angular measurements were rough to
make.
"Using a dime and quarter
at arm's length, I had Kent tell me roughly how high the object was at
different times. While driving his truck, he was able to almost constantly
watch the object. He drove mostly south and east over the county roads. Since
the object was mostly east of him when he could turn off the main road, I noted
that he drove almost exactly a mile in an easterly direction towards it.
"Fortunately, since Kent
was moving about a mile toward the object, I had two angles and one side of a
triangle. Using trigonometry from this, I was able to roughly estimate that the
object was 1.67 miles away from him originally and then 0.67 miles away before
it shot off and was gone from sight in less than one second. It was
approximately 350 feet up and about 35 feet to 50 feet long. Again, this is a
rough estimate and it assumes that the object did not change altitude even
slightly during these few minutes. Kent thought the object was stationary the
whole time he was trying to approach it until it zoomed off.
At approximately 4:00pm, the
reporting witness stated that he stepped outside of his home and noticed a
passenger jet flying south-southwest. As he watched the jet, he noticed that it
appeared to fly through "a circle of what looked like red stars."
According to the witness, the circle was comprised of 7-10 "stars"
and was the size of a grapefruit at arm's length. The witness further stated
that there was a straight line of stars at the base of the circle. He stated it
"seemingly formed the Omega sign."
As the witness observed this, he
also noticed what appeared to be a "gray tube swimming lazy clockwise
circles within the circle of stars." The witness then had his wife and a
houseguest come to look at the spectacle. They also observed this display,
according to the witness. He then proceeded across the street to a friend's
backyard where there were six people gathered together. He hoped to draw other
people's attention to the things in the sky.
According to the witness, no one
seemed interested in looking up or listening to him when he mentioned the
things in the sky above apart from one couple that seemed interested. During
five minutes of observing the "stars" and object, the
"stars" gradually moved from their original configuration and spread
out in a diffused pattern around the grey tube. The witness decided to retrieve
his binoculars from his home and then returned to his friend's backyard.
Upon returning, the witness
found that people had set up a telescope in his absence. After a few minutes of
viewing the things in the sky, someone drew the witness' attention to directly
above their heads. According to the witness, "straight overhead is another
spray of stars, perhaps dozens, close to a strange, blob-like morphing mass."
The witness further stated that the mass seemed to be "internally-lit and
was striped with three colors: yellow, green, and white." According to the
witness, "the object was never still and reminded me of some sort of deep
sea jellyfish-like creature." To put it in perspective, the witness
stated:
"Now we have the tube,
continually moving, wriggling, writhing, morphing, folding in on itself,
compressing into a ball, elongating again, the amorphous jellyfish mass,
flattening, elongating, drawing up on itself, and dozens of what looked exactly
like stars about the color of Mars, moving, maneuvering, appearing, fading out,
surrounding these two objects."
The witness also mentioned that
during the 45 minutes or so the observations were made, 2 or 3 passenger jets
flew between the objects and the observers, which gave him the impression that
these things were very high and very huge.
Then "the tube and its stars began to
drift south, and the amorphous mass and its stars began drifting east, seeming
to get higher and higher the further east it went, until it was lost from
sight." According to the witness' impression, he felt the two objects were
"some type of living creatures." This "golden orb of light"
reportedly traveled from the South to the North until it disappeared into a
bank of clouds. This sighting lasted approximately 15-20 seconds.
